Comic books were not popular in Iran until the 1960s when a children’s magazine, Keyhan Bacheha, began publishing them. Between 1969 to 1977 Universal Publishers, published thirteen books from Tintin series.
In 1976 Universal also published a pro-government propaganda comic book about the Iranian post-WWII history illustrated by Dino Attanasio. In the same year the first Comic book illustrated by an Iranian, Rostam and Esfandiar, was published by the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults.
