Lighting with electric light bulbs became popular in the 20th century in Iran and has been an integral part of celebrating religious holidays (such as the Mab’ath or Sha’ban) and public celebrations (such as 4th of Aban before the revolution and Fajr after the revolution). Today colour bulbs and fluorescent lights are used widely for outdoor lightings and Illuminations.
Niches and shelves are still a very important part of the style in older homes in town and villages in Iran. They not only have a functional role to hold and store objects but also are used to display interests and beliefs of the owners.
Beautification is the process of making visual improvements to a place or an urban area. With regard to Iranian towns, this most often involves displaying decorative statues and sculptures in public spaces.
Murals in Tehran used to have mostly political and revolutionary themes but from the early 90s a new style of mural emerged, which is merely decorative.
